The True Cost of Free Websites

The True Cost of Free Websites

free website dealsMost small business owners, particularly those in the start-up phase, are constantly looking for ways to trim expenses. One thing that catches the eye of many business owners is creating a free website. You’ve probably seen ads for 1&1, Wix,, etc, offering free do-it-yourself websites that they will host. On the surface getting your business online with not out of pocket expenses may seem like a great idea, but what is the true cost of a free website?

No Free Lunches

The companies offering free websites are for-profit corporations, not charitable organizations. Have you ever asked yourself how they stay in business if they’re giving their service away free? Obviously, they’re not. Free websites are fraught with hidden ongoing fees that often end up costing you more over time than if you had paid a website designer and a mainstream hosting company.

Opportunity Costs

I’ve been building, developing, and promoting websites for more than 15 years. In that time, I have never seen a successful internet business develop from a free website. Depending upon which service you use, your website could have the following costly issues:

  • Inability to rank well in the search engines
  • Slow loading times
  • Inability to add important site functions
  • Inability to move or upgrade your website
  • Little or no technical support
  • Use of your time that could be focused elsewhere
  • You may have ads for other companies showing on your site
  • Inability to track website usage statistics
  • You could even lose your site all together

Any one of these items could prove more costly to your business than having a professional website built for you. If you end up with several of these issues (which many users do) the cost to your business will likely be quite severe.

Your Company’s Image

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and in today’s digital world, the first thing most people will see of your business is your website. What impression would you have of a business whose website looks like they built it themselves? Wouldn’t that leave you with the impression that they are not a professional organization? What is your company’s image worth? There’s no reason to get trapped in a worthless website when we can build you a professional website for very little cost. A professionally designed and developed website from CFG Media can pay for itself in a short period of time, and continue building your bottom line for years to come.

  • I had a free ecommerce website from Square and never got a single order. After investing in a “real” website, orders started flowing in within the first couple of weeks. Now, I have a steadily growing order flow. Without question, this was the best money I ever spent on my business.

  • I used GoDaddy’s website builder and the only way I ever got traffic to the site was to pay for it. I eventually paid a professional developer to do it right. I wish I had done that in the first place…it would’ve saved me a lot of money in the long run.

  • I had a free Wix site that I don’t think ever got a single visitor. It was pretty much invisible to the search engines. I learned my lesson about that, and invested in a real website.

  • I made this mistake when I was starting my business. I was trying to save money by doing a lot of things on my own. some of those things worked to my benefit, but the free website was a complete flop.
